What is Resilience?  In the context of transition communities, resilience refers to their ability not to collapse at the first sight of oil or food shortages, and to their ability to respond with adaptability to disturbance.  There's a good chapter on Resilience in Rob Hopkins' book 'The Transition Handbook'.  A copy is available from ledeacon@gmail.com  Things that ADD resilience to a community, like Hornsea, would be:

Local Composting

Planting trees (like the orchard)

Using local building materials

Investing in the local community

Shopping locally, supporting local traders

Singing in the local choir

Local currencies

Doing voluntary work

Growing your own food

Things that do not add resilience to a local community, like Hornsea, would be:

Ornamental tree plantings

Sourcing organic food internationally

Carbon offsetting

Buying choral CD's

Consumerism, especially from outside the town

What is re-skilling?  We no longer have many of the basic skills our grandparents took for granted.  Some of these skills might not be appropriate now.  Others will still be very useful.  Perhaps we can enlarge our ideas of what skills we need.  Re-skilling events fulfil different functions.  They bring people together and build networks, they create a sense of 'can do', and they build links between old and young as skills are learned and passed on.  Some ideas for re-skilling events are:

Compost making, preserving, jam-making, making herbal tinctures, knitting, weaving, tree pruning, time management, nutrition and diet, listening skills, managing domestic finances and so on.
